Arestin

Arestin is a localized antibiotic treatment we use as part of caring for gum disease. When plaque and tartar are left below the gumline, the area can become infected and inflamed, forming deeper pockets around the teeth. Scaling and root planing clean those pockets, but in certain cases, adding Arestin can improve healing.

After we complete the deep cleaning in the affected areas, we place very small amounts of Arestin powder directly into the gum pockets. The powder contains tiny microspheres that slowly release an antibiotic over time. This allows the medicine to stay right where the bacteria live, instead of traveling through your whole system. The placement is quick and usually comfortable. There is no need for stitches, and you can go about your normal routine with just a few simple instructions about brushing, flossing, and eating in the treated area for the first day or two. Over the next several weeks, the Arestin works quietly beneath the gums, helping reduce the number of harmful bacteria.

We combine this with careful home care coaching and regular follow-up visits. At your periodontal maintenance appointments, we measure pocket depths, check for bleeding, and decide together whether additional localized therapy is needed.

Arestin is not a cure by itself, but it can be a helpful tool when we are trying to stabilize moderate gum disease and avoid or delay more aggressive treatment.
